Lemuel Francis Abbott was a British painter who specialised in portraits. This painting depicts the artists father, William Traies of Crediton. Abbott was especially popular for portaits of navy officers; however, this specific painting being a family portrait, it allows for an informal posture. Moreover it gives us an interesting insight into the late 18th century male fashion.
