Natural history collections are an important repository of historic information about wildlife and can often show how species distribution has changed over the last 100 years. This specimen of Gryfalcon was found in Scotland by Scottish ornithologist, Edward Hargitt, an associate of Henry Seebohm. The specimen is interesting as, today, Gyrfalcons don't usually venture any further south than the Shetland Islands. Edward Hargitt probably knew Seebohm through his brother, William Vernon Hargitt, who lived in Sheffield.
