Thomas Bush Hardy specialised in seascapes. This atmospheric painting, possibly painted in the early hours of the morning depicts a beach with fishing boats on the shore, un-loading their cargo. Whist painting his subjects, Hardy developed a bond with all the fishing communities he met around England and Europe. He thought highly of the men and women which can be seen in many of his paintings.
