This landscape is based on Wilfred Avery’s intimate knowledge of the Devon landscape. It refers, in particular to the area around Exmouth and the Exe Estuary in East Devon where Avery lived from 1946 to 1952. Avery’s paintings were neither entirely abstract nor figurative, but somewhere in between. He wanted to create an ambiguous space that came from a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious mind.
