Wilfred Avery rarely painted from the model, and therefore it is likely that he created this still life from his imagination.
Whilst studying at St Pauls College, Cheltenham, Avery met Paul Nash who had encouraged him to look to the Parisian artists for inspiration. His still-life and figure paintings subsequently show clear influences from Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Nicholas De Stael.
