Les and Doreen Barnett, pictured here, are originally from Bradford. They sit by the road that travels from Malham to Arncliffe in Yorkshire and have been coming to this spot for almost 50 years. Roberts deliberately included the car in the photograph so as not to make a timeless image. Instead, it reflects the Barnetts’ experience of this view. ‘We English’ is a series of landscapephotographs taken during a road trip across England. The images focus on people at leisure and explore British identity. Roberts’ figures merge with their surroundings and seem to become part of the vast landscape.
