Albert Joseph Moore specialised in painting female subjects draped in ancient Greek-inspired attire. This painting is part of a pair titled “Battledore and Shuttlecock”, referring to an ancient game resembling modern badminton. Here, the subject is a woman clothed in a brown and green drapery holding a bat in her right hand and the shuttlecock in her left. The paintings may possibly have been done as a study, hence their sketchy, unfinished appearance.
