Sir Henry Raeburn was a successful Scottish painter who specialised in portraits. The sitter in this work is young Lady Mary Lyon, portrayed in her innocent youth wearing a white gown. The topic is light and graceful, as underlined by the blonde curls of the child and the flowers she holds. However, the artist’s taste for lighting effects is demonstrated by the darker shades on the right side of the painting, bringing dramatic contrast and depth to this otherwise straight-forward subject.
