The Gordons depicted in this watercolour were the Scottish Highlanders. Gerald Spencer Pryse made many watercolours and lithographs of the frontline action In the First World War. At the beginning of the war Pryse became a soldier, he saw the horrors of the war in France and Belgium first hand. He became an Official War Artist towards the end of the war, recording the conditions of the trenches and life as a soldier.
