This watercolour shows the conditions the troops were faced with during the First World War. Gerald Spencer Pryse had first hand experience of fighting as a soldier before he became a war artist. Even as a soldier, he had been recording the conditions of the trenches and bunkers. He had applied to become an Official War Artist several times during the war but due to his accomplishments as a soldier his applications were put to one side, he eventually became one in 1917.
