This painting features a bust portrait of a middle-aged man The man’s features are rendered naturalistically with soft brushstrokes. He wears sombre black clothing with a white ruffled collar, a style familiar to Dutch and Flemish Renaissance portraiture. The sitter’s identity is unknown, although he is likely to be a member of the burgher (middle) class.
Key was a well known Dutch painter of altarpieces and portraits, often painting the prominent Antwerp burghers and nobility, such as William of Orange.
