This painting depicts a number of sailing ships on a calm sea. Marine painting has a long history in the Netherlands especially, thanks to its geography and its importance in international sea trade. The rise of Romanticism in the 18th and 19th centuries led to increased interest in maritime scenes, and marine painting was popularised by artists such as Turner, Monet, and Courbet. Coastal towns in the Netherlands like Scheveningen and Katwijk were also popular with many Victorian painters, appealing to viewers and buyers familiar with seaside holidays.
