John George Graves (1866-1945) was a successful businessman founding one of the country’s first mail order businesses. He was a great benefactor to the city of Sheffield and was vital in the development of the Graves Art Gallery. Graves donated £30,000 to help build the city library on the understanding that £20,000 be used to build an art gallery. Over his lifetime he presented nearly 700 paintings from his own collection to the city.
This portrait is most likely to have been painted for the opening of the Graves Gallery in 1934.
