Antiono van Assen was an artist who specialised in engravings as well as portrait and genre paintings. This still life of a basket of flowers is not a typical subject for him. It is likely that Van Assen, who started working in England at the end of the 18th century, was drawing inspiration from his Dutch origins in depicting this bouquet of roses and yellow carnations. His attention to detail is demonstrated by the delicately balanced composition and realistic appearance of the flowers.
