This is one of several sketches for an oil painting entitled ‘Advance Dressing Station on the Struma 1916'. Henry Lamb has captured the conditions in which the medical team had to work, the group of stretcher-bearers are waiting with a wounded and malaria-stricken patient.
During the First World War Lamb became a qualified doctor and enlisted. He was stationed with the Northumbrian Field Ambulance Unit, where he went to Salonika, in Greece.
