The Union Grinding Wheel was on Alma Street, near Kelham Island Industrial Museum. Grinding workshops like the one in this painting were dangerous places in which to work. Health and safety regulations did not exist at that time. Breathing in dust caused lung conditions leading to early death. The stone grinding wheels could explode, inflicting injury. The owner of the grinding shop would rent out grinding stones to individual grinders.
