William John Stevenson was a Sheffield artist who painted numerous interior views of workers in industrial settings in the city. This painting, however, is a landscape at Oughtibridge north of Sheffield along the river Don. When this picture was made in 1876, Oughtibridge was experiencing a growth period thanks to the establishment of a forge, several mills, a tannery and a brewery, as well as the opening of a railway station in 1845.
