Richard Parkes Bonington was an English painter whose short career was spent mainly in France. This depiction of the famous St Marks square is proof of his admiration for Venice, which he visited in 1826. The Piazetta, an offshoot of the main plaza at St Marks, was a common subject for painters on their Grand Tour. Here, Bonington used vertical elements to infuse dramatic energy to his sketchy yet vibrant landscape. Ships, buildings, and pedestrians cast long shadows at sunset, contrasting against the vivid background.
