Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey RA (1781-1841) was born in a small farmhouse at Jordanthorpe, and was apprenticed to a wood carver and gilder in Sheffield. He became a portrait painter in Paradise Square before moving to London, where he achieved fame as a sculptor and was knighted in 1835. Chantrey was buried at Norton, where he is commemorated by an obelisk at the edge of the churchyard.
