This black and white ruffed lemur was donated to the museum in 1892 by George Sanger, founder of Sanger's Circus. The lemur was one of the attractions at the circus and died in captivity. Today, this species is critically endangered. Museum specimens such as this are critical for our understanding of the decline of lemurs in the wild and might provide clues to how the species could be helped to recover.
