The decoration on this jar is copied from a woodblock printed book illustration. The double wavy line down the middle of the scene represents a fading in and fading out of the scene, a technique used in woodblock printing.
The scene is that of a battle, with prisoners of war appearing before an army official. THe cover shows a soldier with a sword and magic shield fighting a warrior on horseback.
They may relate events that took place in the ancient Chu region of China, covering most of the eastern and southern parts of the country. During the 300s BC, their armies fought with other Chinese states for land and power.
