One of the most popular Guanyins was 'song zi Guanyin', meaning 'Guanyin who sends sons'. It was the duty of every Chinese woman to bear sons, and many women prayed to this deity for help. Thus Guanyin has a small boy scrambling over her shoulder, and both are smiling lovingly.
