The lid of this box is decorated with peony sprays. The Chinese name for the tree peony is 'mu dan'. That literally means 'male vermilion'; vermillion is a pigment made from the powered mineral cinnabar which is made into the traditional red ink used in Chinese art. It is therefore a suitable decoration for a gentleman's box that would have contained writing brushes or an ink-stone.
