This belt buckle is carved with a coiled dragon in waves. This represents the aspect of the dragon that controls the earth and the heavens from which rain comes to help plants grow and put out fires. Unlike the western fiery dragon, the Chinese dragon is associated with water. In the spring it ascends to the skies and in the autumn it buries itself in the watery depths. This kind of belt buckle may well once have had some precious or semi-precious inlays.
