This is a frame for a woman's fan. It is carved with a melon vine, symbolising fertility and a wish for many sons. The melon shown with its vine and tendrils represents longevity and 'ten thousand generations'. The wooden spandrels are all individually numbered, presumably to fit whatever fan leaves were to be applied to them.
