The box, one of a pair, is in the form of lotus leaves covered in insects, birds, fish and crabs. The words for lotus and crab form a rebus wishing luck in the Civil Service exams, so it may have been a gift for a scholar. Inside is a simple fishing boat with bamboo-mat awning, paddled by two women and steered by a man, which sails across a lotus pond with crabs and ducks.
