This jar is decorated with Daoist figures, a Buddha figure and soldiers. An inscription reads:
'The three religions jointly overcome the fairy horde'
This relates to the three basic philosophies that underpinned the Chinese world view: Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism.
Confucianism is based on a number of moral and social virtues.
Daoism has many deities and immortal beings. Many Chinese people believe they can bring good fortune and look to them for help in everyday life.
Buddhism came into China from India around 100 BC. Figures of the Buddha himself, other divine beings or monks were popular subjects in art.
