This silk fan is decorated with ostrich feathers along the edge and has an ivory handle. The decoration shows the mythical phoenix bird. In legend the hard working but plain phoenix saved the lives of all other birds during a drought. As thanks, the birds gave him their most beautiful feathers. The phoenix is seen as a symbol of auspiciousness and happiness. The style of this fan suggests that it was made for European rather than Chinese use and may therefore be an expensive export item.
