This screen was to shade a scholar’s desk from the sun. It has pivoting ivory panels showing scholars, philosophers and animals. On the other side are extracts from the The writings of the scholar Confucius (551-479 BC) in tiny characters. The carver is the famous Yu Shuo from Beijing who has made two other pieces in the Grice Collection.
