This vase, one of a pair, is in the shape of a bronze vessel. On the sides are scenes of paradise, where the Royal Lady of the West and the Lord of the East receive the peaches of immortality, among the Eight Immortals bearing their auspicious emblems. On the lid Shou Lao, the Star God of Longevity, plays with a lion dog. This deity holds a unique position of high honour among Daoist gods. The other immortals such as the Royal Lady of the West enjoy his presence and advice. The lion is a symbol of power and dignity.
