This vase, one of a pair, shows Daoist paradise scenes with figures from legend such as the Royal Lady of the West, the Lord of the East, and Shou Lao, the Star God of Long Life. On the lid are the Heavenly Twins, both called 'He'. One holds a lotus flower which has the same sound and is a pun for the word 'harmony'. The other holds a box which has the same sound and is a pun for the word 'union'. These twins are the patron deities of marriage and their image was used for wedding ceremonies; symbolising love and a happy union for the newlyweds.
