On the lid of this vase are the Daoist Immortals on sacred animals wielding swords and a sceptre. Around the shoulders are six rams heads, in a style also seen on ancient Chinese bronzes. They belong to the earth element within the Daoist five element cosmology of earth, wood, metal, water and fire. The scenes on the sides derive from historical drama.
