Robert Buhler was known for making portraits as well as urban and rural landscape paintings. He made several paintings of orchards during this wartime period in his work. Of this work, Buhler wrote: “This site of the painting is on a slope above a hamlet called Borden Wood- which is two miles north of Rogate (between Petersfield & Midhurst).” He painted another version around the same time from the other side of the chicken huts and this now hangs in The Friends Room in the Royal Academy in London. Both pictures were exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition shortly after the paintings were made. The artist later gave this painting to his mother.
