Dante Rossetti was one of the leaders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In this painting, the red background dramatically contrasts with the darker tones of the man’s hair and clothes. In Rossetti’s portraits the subject frequently looks at the viewer with an enigmatic stare. The title indicates that this man is a musician; therefore his dishevelled appearance and moody glare could be interpreted as that of a passionate and mysterious artist, befitting a Pre-Raphaelite work.
