Joseph Haslam Hawkesworth was a Sheffield-based artist who specialised in landscape painting. This picture of the river Rivelin west of Sheffield is typical of Hawkesworth's work, with a balance of lush natural scenery and human interest in the form of buildings. Hawkesworth creates a sense of space and perspective by rendering the rocks and plant life in the foreground more fully than distant trees and hills, giving the impression of a soft, fading horizon.
