John Lavery stayed in St Jean de Luz in South West France in early 1917, whilst his wife was recovering from a car accident. He sketched a number of views along the harbour. Lavery had just been offered a job as Official War Artist, but he couldn’t take it due to his wife’s accident. CRW Nevinson was sent in his place, and Lavery took up the job later that year.
