When describing his works on paper, Nigel Hall has said: “They are not preliminary studies for sculpture but related explorations freed from many of the laws of physics that a sculptor must obey. They are close to my heart, [and] stand as works in their own right.” Hall makes abstract sculptures from polished wood or steel. This is an early charcoal drawing with the paper divided by folds. The white lines were achieved using an empty ballpoint pen, creating recessed lines which the charcoal didn’t fill.
