The title of this painting is taken from the name of the Scottish village where William Gillies lived from 1939 until he died in 1973. Gillies painted the village many times from various angles and at different times of the year. The artist was deeply interested in nature; even in his village paintings the natural world dominates the composition. Here, buildings are dwarfed by the expansive and dramatic sky and nestled deeply into the greenery of the foreground.
