Since the 1960s, Derrick Greaves has made several ‘flower’ works which mark a turn away from his earlier ‘Kitchen Sink’ paintings of the 1950s. These works use a simpler vocabulary of popular images that align his work to the increasing stylisation of 1960s British pop art designed to appeal to the mass population. In 1959, the artist said he was “feeling a desire to lessen the gap that exists between audience and painting.” In the Studio 2 - Flowers in the Studio is one of a number of works Greaves made in 1973 of flowers in his studio and is one example of his many still life compositions.
