This print depicts a military review of troops in formation bearing weapons and banners. Callot’s use of multiple ‘stoppings out’, or applications of the ground medium, allowed him to render distant areas of the background more lightly than foreground objects. This creates a sense of perspective in the image, even with its setting in a large open space.
There is no indication whether the image represents a particular event, but the scene bears some similarity to those in Callot’s series of prints of the sieges of Breda, Re and La Rochelle, all completed around the same time.
