William Strang has included lots of contrasting textures in this graceful portrait. The fabric of the woman’s satin dress, her suede gloves, the beads of her necklace and petals of the white rose are all meticulously painted. It’s not clear whether the title of this painting refers to the flower the woman holds or the woman herself, who has an ‘English Rose’ complexion.
