Edward Stott was studying in France when he painted this work. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and was heavily influenced by the naturalism of the French Realists. Cabbages appear to be a popular motif in depictions of rural gardens during this period. They often featured in the work of the Glasgow School who were also strongly influenced by the French Realist School.
