This photograph is from the series Remains of Elmet, which was made in West Yorkshire on the site of the prehistoric city of Elmet. Fay Godwin’s photographs inspired the poet Ted Hughes and were published alongside his poetry in 1979.
Godwin’s inspiration for landscape photography came from her love of walking, she began capturing isolated and remote areas the British countryside and coast. She later became leader of the Ramblers Association and was an advocator of the right-to-roam campaign.
