Magnesium Bird is a tribute to Sutapa Biswas' father who died in 2000. The subject of birds was the last conversation she had with her father and birdsong was the first sound she heard after he died. The small birds which are intricately made out of magnesium ribbon ignite and create a haze of smoke in the 18th century walled garden of Harewood House. Biswas often uses objects that reflect the past, challenging ideas of memory, feminism and cultural identity.
