Daniel Maclise is most well-known for his history paintings, but he started his career by painting portraits. His fame came from making sketches and painting famous friends and other celebrities. His style developed and he began painting history paintings, often based from literary sources with accurate historical details. This composition of an unknown lady with a dark figure in the background offers an insight into her life. The title “Yes or No” offers the possible interpretation of a woman pondering her answer to a suitor’s offer.
