During the First World War, William Roberts served in the Royal Artillery as a gunner on the Western Front and these experiences changed him forever. His Vorticist works had previously celebrated the new machine age and had been cool, geometric and abstract. However, his later war paintings are dominated by the human figure, expressing his complex emotions about the conflict.
