Paul Waplington is a Nottingham-born artist who created a number of paintings of English industrial townscapes, as well as the large mural of a Steelworker on Castle Street. In this picture of the Wybourn Estate in east Sheffield, the uniformity of the council houses is broken by Waplington’s unusual perspective and the free-flowing, meandering road which dominates the scene. The groupings of figures in the foreground combine with the dynamic shapes of the road to infuse the picture with a sense of a living, vibrant community.
