This painting shows a busy stretch of waterway along the coast of the Netherlands. Serres was a well-known British marine painter, often of rough seas and important naval battles. Serres often painted in ink and watercolours as well as oils, and some ink lines can be seen around the figures in the foreground where he sketched their placement before painting.
