This view of Venice shows the Palazzo Dario in the centre, a building that was revered by artist and critic John Ruskin and painted by artists including Claude Monet. Perhaps unexpectedly, Greaves has chosen to show this picturesque city on a rainy day, his colour palette is muted and the overall impression is rather sombre. In 1952 Derrick Greaves had received a travelling scholarship to Italy. During this time he came into contact with Italian Realist painters, who explored similar ideas and subjects to Greaves. 'Two years in Italy… Another revelation! I felt immediately at home and relaxed there.' Derrick Greaves
