In 1986 the artist Anthony Lowe completed two large pictures of Sheffield. This painting represents the area around the Pond Street bus station. The prominence of the rivers in the foreground references the Ponds Forge area’s location near the confluence of Porter Brook and the River Sheaf, and just south of the convergence of the Sheaf and the Don. Although Sheffield city centre has undergone significant redevelopment since the 1980s, the railway station, the Park Hill flats and the Cholera Monument remain identifiable landmarks in the painting.
